B.U.R.P.S is a simple and intuitive methodology which allows for immediate assessment, with a simple and quick means to identify serious problems - it also avoids missing injuries or signs key to empowering first aiders to save lives. It has already been adopted widely by the emergency services and in industry.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive imposes standards for First Aid provision on companies. In fact, the need for First Aid provision equally exists for all bodies, clubs and leisure activities wherever people gather, relax or exercise together.
The UK’s Health and Safety Executive imposes standards for First Aid provision on companies. In fact, the need for First Aid provision equally exists for all bodies, clubs and leisure activities wherever people gather, relax or exercise together. The HSE requires that sufficient first-aid equipment, facilities and trained personnel must be available at all times and in all places, depending on the hazards and risks there present. However, in addition to training and First Aid kits, in order to be compliant with HSE guidance every business must have a current, documented first aid risk assessment. Proper First Aid provision therefore has 4 parts:
The initial assessment must establish the hazards faced by an organisation and its staff, and identify the specific first training, equipment and SOPs required in order to provide appropriate first aid in case of need. The responsibility to carry out such assessment rests squarely on the shoulders of each company, club etc.. First Aid Risk and Needs Assessments are complex. Consider that for each location in which a company has operations it is necessary to map out : • the size of the organisation • the distribution of the workforce • the nature of each workplace • the nature of the work in each workplace and the resultant hazards and risks • work patterns • the remoteness of any site from emergency medical services • annual leave and other absences of first aiders and appointed persons • the needs of travelling, remote and lone workers • employees working on shared or multi-occupied sites • first-aid provision for non-employees • the organisation’s accident history. Sandstone has experienced operatives who are available to work with your H&S representative to assist them in carrying out your risk assessment exercise, to prepare your written plan and then to put in place your personnel, processes, kit and the ongoing training required. If you are a large organisation which already has a professional First Aid Risk and Needs Assessment we will work with you to develop the training, specify the kit and draft standard operating procedures (SOPs) required. Otherwise we will work with you to carry out the risk assessment first.
A First Aid Risk and Needs Assessment needs to be carried out and updated annually or when there are major changes in activity.
Purchasing ‘off the shelf’ first aid kits without a risk and needs assessment not only means that you are not compliant with the HSE requirements, it also means that in case of a serious accidents you are most likely not appropriately prepared.
Purchasing ‘off the shelf’ first aid kits without a risk and needs assessment not only means that you are not compliant with the HSE requirements, it also means that in case of a serious accidents you are most likely not appropriately prepared.
As an example: if your risk assessment identifies that there exists a risk of major injury such as bad cuts or trauma (machinery, vehicles, warehousing) your first aid kit should always contain basic trauma equipment such as a tourniquet or cellox (a barrier against ongoing hemorrhage), and designated first aiders should be trained to use the kit and know how to act as first responders.
We will work with you to develop the various First Aid kits that each organisation or location requires and will advise and assist in procurement. Your SOPs must ensure that these kits are located so as to be immediately available in case of an accident.
In order to achieve a successful outcome in an emergency situation there are a number of factors that need to be considered in addition to the first aid training and equipment.
Pre-designed routines and actions ensures the best chance of success. Your SOPs need to address, for example:
We are available to assist you to develop your SOPs to give your organisation the best chance of success in an emergency situation.
We are also available to organise and carry out periodic exercises of your SOPs at each of your locations to ensure that all involved are well versed to react when the worst happens.
