Empowerment Through First Aid Education and Training

Empowerment Through First Aid Education and Training

As a new member of the Sandstone Team, I recently had the opportunity to complete our Emergency First Aid at Work course thanks to our Chief Instructor Mike Hope.

The course and it's delivery exceeded all my expectations.

Unlike traditional class-room based sessions, this training was designed around live scenarios which required all of us participating to get involved and apply the skills we were being taught to real-life situations. From the moment the day began when we immediately found ourselves in the middle of an emergency scenario - it was clear that this wasn't going to be your typical first aid training.

The scenarios themselves were realistic and each one well thought out to mirror situations we could encounter in our daily lives or at work. Whether it was responding to a mock car accident or to someone crushed by heavy machinery, the intensity and authenticity of these scenarios were both challenging and enlightening.

A key aspect of the training which I thoroughly enjoyed was learning to take charge and delegate tasks. In high-pressure situations, clear communication and leadership are vital. We practiced giving calm, clear instructions to one another - designating roles such as calling emergency services, securing the area, and providing basic first aid until professional help arrived.

The instructors, Mike Hope and Tim Bradshaw, are seasoned professionals with extensive experience in responding to emergencies. They encouraged us through the scenarios and emphasised the importance of scene management.

They provided real-time feedback, correcting our techniques and boosting our confidence. The hands-on approach allowed us to practice vital skills such as CPR, wound packing, the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and applying a tourniquet - reinforcing our learning through active participation.

One of the most impactful aspects of the day was the emotional engagement. Knowing that these scenarios could easily happen in real life added a level of seriousness and urgency to our training. We were not just practicing techniques; we were preparing to save lives.

By the end of the day, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. The immersive nature of the training ensured that we were not only equipped with technical first aid skills but also the ability to manage an emergency scene effectively.

Having successfully completely the course, I feel significantly more prepared and assured in my ability to provide first aid in critical moments. The fantastic training day by Mike not only equipped me with practical skills but also instilled a sense of readiness and calmness in the face of potential emergencies.IMG 9698
