First Aid at Work training has become a tick box exercise with courses consisting of 8 hours of power point often taking place in a classroom.
Whilst it’s fair to say that the correct techniques have been taught they have not been put into context.
One of the key factors in saving lives in unexpected circumstances is not remembering the correct techniques but how to react to a stressful situation. In the event of a life-threatening bleed you have just 2 minutes to stop it before the casualty is unrecoverable. You can see that speed of reaction is critical. This cannot be taught or practiced in a classroom.
Training should be scenario based and focussed on situations that may be faced in the workplace. This teaches muscle memory and builds confidence in the participants.
The purpose of training is to equip the participants with better skills and ability to respond to a real-life situation. Why has is become about attending a course?
We are not asking people to do more, just do it better!
